Waste to Energy for a brighter future

Clearly the right thing to do for the good of Puerto Rico, the environment, the economy, and the people.

01. Clean Energy

Power with no emissions and no waste, no negative impact on environment.

02. Good for Environment

Can mix in waste from current landfills to reduce the size and potentially eliminate all landfills.

03. Strengthens Economy

Creates jobs and revenue that promote positive economic growth.

04. Tested & Proven

All benefits are proven over the long term in multiple countries.

Current Waste Management Systems Harm the Environment on a Global Scale

  • Landfill space shortages

  • Pollution

  • Greenhouse gases

  • Diseases & Deaths

Puerto Rico Landfill Crisis

Puerto Rico first recognized it's landfill crisis over 50 years ago. As a result the Commonwealth created agencies to tackle the crisis in the 1970s. The current state of Puerto Rico's landfills per the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Federal Emergency Management Agency is outlined below.

  • 12 of 23 landfills in direct contact with soil and other natural resources

  • 6 out of 23 landfills operating under closing and compliance order from the EPA

  • Many landfills are in flood valleys, impact wetlands, potentially have direct impact on drinking water sources, and/or impact nature preserves

  • Land, water, & air pollution

  • Greenhouse gases – landfills create methane

Zero emissions Waste to Energy provides the Solution.

Waste to Energy

Technology & Benefits

Converts solid waste into electricity and/or heat – an ecological, cost-effective way of energy recovery.

The Process

The inputs of a Waste to Energy plant are household garbage, water and air.  The outputs of a Waste to Energy plant are electricity, an inert ash (to be used in building materials), water, and clean air.

Generating Power

Basic power plant burns a fuel; heats water to make steam; steam turns a turbine to produce electricity.

Waste to Energy

Garbage is the fuel vs. diesel, coal, gas, nuclear, etc.

Emissions Technologies

Clean Energy Systems

  • Babcock & Wilcox has been in clean energy decades. ClimateBright™ technologies generate needed power, while lowering greenhouse gases and other emissions.

  • ADIOX Scrubber Technology

  • Carbon Capture System

  • Final design of scrubber system will be determined after study of input fuel and other factors.

Dynagrate
Pivoting Combustion Grate

An inclined combustion system which provides for the optimal burn of waste. Waste enters at the top of the grate. The grate agitation causes a very efficient burn and inert ash exits at the bottom of the grate.

  • Large installed base with diverse set of customers

  • Grate design allows for high availability and long operational time, leading to reduced O&M cost

  • High thermal efficiency and low emissions

  • Fuel flexibility

  • Factory assembled modules reduce field construction

ADIOX Dioxin Removal

  • Carbon impregnated polymer, absorbs dioxins and contaminants

  • ADIOX Scrubber Technology

  • This technology first implemented in Denmark in 2005 – Proven over time

Carbon Capture System

  • B&W has been developing carbon capture since 1979

  • Over 90 active patents for carbon capture

  • Post-Combustion, Oxy-Combustion, Hydrogen Combustion

  • BrightLoop™ Technology for the future

Testing & Monitoring

Real-time Emissions Monitoring

  • Monitoring emissions to ensure within limits

  • Emissions testing every 10 seconds

  • Exceeds all Regulatory Requirements

  • Exceeds all Governmental and Public Reporting Requirements
